GOOD DQ DEED: MN manager reflects on meeting with Warren Buffett

Posted: Updated:

Joey Prusak was 19 when he gave a $20 bill from his own wallet to a blind customer who dropped one inside of the Dairy Queen where he worked. That act of kindness went viral and took him all the way to a meeting with the Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffett.

Dairy Queen manager's act of kindness goes viral

By the time Buffett and his handlers made it to the Dairy Queen booth for a brief moment, Prusak was just inches away from the man who owns the fast-food empire and other iconic businesses.

"Just a couple seconds, so all of us there were able to see him," Prusak said.

Until the media crush got in the way, that is.

"Going around people, trying to jump up in the air and take pictures," Prusak recalled.

Prusak never got to personally meet Buffett at the Berkshire Hathaway shareholders meeting in Nebraska last weekend, but he got some cool photographs and enjoyed observing a legend in action.

"He doesn't let the money get to his head," Prusak said. "He doesn't let the fame get to his head."

Speaking of fame, the reason why Prusak was Buffett's guest is the fame he garnered last September as a Dairy Queen manager in Hopkins. He captivated the nation with how he responded after a blind man who dropped $20 in the store only to have another woman behind him pocket the cash. In fact, a fan created an animation of the good deed and uploaded it to YouTube.

"What's funny is that's kind of how it went down," Prusak remarked.

After the woman refused to return the money, Prusak kicked her out and gave the man $20 from his own wallet. When his feel-good story got out, Buffet noticed -- and so did celebrities like Queen Latifah.

Now that he's back in Hopkins, he's still getting recognized by Dairy Queen customers -- but his kid sister and his mother are helping him stay grounded and Prusak says that's just fine.

"I think there are a lot more people who are just like me than what get recognized," he said. "I think it was just luck that my story took off on a snap of a finger."

Prusak still says he wants to own a Dairy Queen franchise, and said Buffett did buy a vanilla orange bar while the two were at the booth. He also said the blind customer did come back to thank him, but the woman who pocketed the cash has yet to return.
