Privatized trash pickup begins in Detroit

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - Privatized trash pickup for some neighborhoods in Detroit began on Monday.

The city's Chief Operating Officer, Gary Brown, says this is a win-win situation. He says the city just didn't have the money to fix its garbage trucks or buy news ones, so going private took care of that problem. Plus, he adds it gives the people who live here better service.

The Department of Public Works has been plagued with almost triple the number of sick calls each day since the city decided to go private. It had trash piling up over job cuts, but the city's chief operating officer says the agreement with Rizzo Environmental Services and Advanced Services actually benefits them. Those who wanted jobs kept them, while others took new ones with those private companies and got more money.

"The important part for me is that we're able to shift resources to other areas that are more of a priority to public safety instead of mechanics working on garbage trucks," says Brown.

The deal also includes bulk trash pick up every two weeks instead of just four times a year and the option for residents to recycle.

Southwest Detroit and the east side will see the benefits now, as will the west side beginning in June.

The city's fleet of garbage trucks will be sold on an online auction set sometime this fall. Brown believes the auction could bring in 10 million dollars.
