Nine performers injured at circus show in Providence

Posted: Updated:
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) -- A spokesman says eight acrobats fell from an aerial platform at a circus in Rhode Island while one dancer was injured on the floor below.

Providence Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare commissioner says the injuries sustained in Sunday's accident at the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus were not life-threatening. Injuries included broken limbs and back injuries. He says the performers fell 25 to 40 feet. Numerous ambulances and other emergency vehicles responded to the scene just after noon Sunday.

Pare says officials and inspectors at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence have not yet determined how the accident occurred.

In a video of the performance posted online, audience members watched as a colorful curtain was dropped to reveal a number of performers connected to each other and suspended in the air. Seconds after the performance begins, the device holding the women dropped from the ceiling, plunging the women to the floor.

The show's general manager says the accident occurred during the "hair hang" act while performers are hanging from their hair.

The show was halted as emergency crews responded and took the injured to nearby hospitals.

The circus arrived in town on Friday and had performances scheduled through Monday. The Dunkin' Donuts Center says two shows scheduled for later Sunday were put on hold, and two others Monday have been allowed to proceed without any aerial stunts.
