Mom who left child in car while shopping pleads not guilty

Posted: Updated:
TEMPE, Ariz. - A woman pleaded not guilty Thursday to allegedly leaving her young son inside a hot car while she went shopping.

Maria-Theresa Pio is facing one count of child abuse.

Surveillance video from a Fry's store in Tempe near Rural and Ray shows her walking around the store, talking on her cell phone and having a drink at Starbucks.

Police say the whole time she was inside, which was 41 minutes, her 14-month-old son was in the car.

The temperature inside the SUV was reportedly 124 degrees and the child's car seat was 113 degrees.

Someone noticed the boy inside the car and called police.

The boy was sweating and crying and taken to the hospital, but he was ok.

Her next court appearance is expected to be on June 19.
