Tim Skubick: Tea party continues to challenge GOP in Mich.

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) - Tea Party activists continue to be the convenient whipping boy for segments of the political establishment and segments of the MSM.  But whether you like them or not, give them credit they are not sitting on the sidelines like most citizens. They are getting in the game and by doing so they have plenty at risk.

When Gov. Rick Snyder successfully rounded-up enough GOP lawmakers to join hands with a host of Democrats to pass the Medicaid expansion bill, some T.P.ers promised to get even.

And when the dust settled last week after the filing deadline came and went, turns out 13 incumbent GOP lawmakers have a target on their back going into the August primary.

They voted yes with the governor.  The Tea Party wants voters to vote no on them.

Of course challenging a sitting lawmaker is verboten in the establishment GOP and Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville has promised to come to the aid of his members.

Which underscores part of the charm of the Tea Party movement:  They don't play by the rules and could give two hoots about deferring to lawmakers who have been elected.

But there-in lies the risk.  If they can knock off a number of those incumbents, they will emerge stronger and more confrontational for other fights down the road.  In other words the establishment will have to deal with them not just diss them.

Ah but, and there is always an ah but in this game, should they score a goose egg their political prowess will diminish to the status of the 90 pound weakling and not even Charles Atlas can fix that.

The establishment has more money and more organizational umpth than the other side and usually that wins.  But the Tea Party has something else, anger in the electorate and in an off year election, where most voters find something else to do on election day, angry can drive those voters to the polls and incumbents could be toast.

Mr. Richardville and company, looking like the hare in this tortoise and the hare race, are confident they'll prevail.  If not, Mr. Richardville may be glad he's being term limited out of office at the end of the year.
