The Washington Nationals will be without outfielder Bryce Harper a little longer than they thought. ESPN.com reports Harper will have surgery on a torn ligament in his thumb on Tuesday, and he'll be out of commission until July.
ESPN.com says Harper needs surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb. He hurt his hand while sliding head-first into third base in Friday night's victory over the San Diego Padres.
Harper stayed in the game for an inning before being replaced.
Last season, Harper missed 44 games with a knee injury sustained after he slammed into the right field wall while making a play during a game at Dodger Stadium.
