Yavapai County jail to use video for inmate visits

Posted: Updated:

CAMP VERDE, Ariz. (AP) - Inmates at a northern Arizona jail will soon be able to have video chats with visiting loved ones.

The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office says a new video visitation system will launch Monday at the Camp Verde Detention Center.

Authorities say the system will eventually replace the standard face-to-face visits where visitors and inmates are separated by a glass partition.

Sheriff's spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn says video visits will decrease the amount of movement among inmates.

D'Evelyn says the system will also have an online video-chat system so that family and friends can talk to inmates remotely.

D'Evelyn says an online chat will require a $10 charge.

The Sheriff's Office only allows 25 minutes for visits.
