A 16-year-old Connecticut high school student died Friday after being stabbed in a reported prom date dispute.

According to, Maren Sanchez was attacked in a stairwell at Jonathan Law High School in Milford, Conn. Teachers and emergency responders tried to save her life, but they were unsuccessful.

The suspect, a 16-year-old male whose name is being withheld because he's a minor, was subdued by teachers immediately after the attack and is in custody, authorities said.

Police would not immediately confirm a motive in the attack, but local media reported it was because Sanchez refused to go to the prom with the suspect.

A student at the school told that a teacher who witnessed the attack said the suspect asked Sanchez to the prom, but she said no because she has a boyfriend. The suspect then began to strangle her, pushed her down a flight of stairs and stabbed her.

Police said that the attack was an isolated incident and no other students were in danger.

The school's prom, which was scheduled for Friday night, was postponed to an as-yet undetermined date, a school official said.

Sanchez was an honor student and swim team manager who was heavily involved with community service, particularly causes like underage drinking and veterans' services, the official said.
