Police: Phone scam going around in Oakland Co.

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam after receiving multiple complaints.

Investigators say those behind the scam appear to be calling with a 248 area code impersonating police and county court employees. They told residents that a warrant has been issued for their arrest because they did not appear for jury duty.  The suspects then told victims to pay the fine using a prepaid Green Dot Visa Card to avoid being arrested.

The suspects also provided an alternate 248 area code number for the victims to obtain verification. When this number was called for confirmation, the phone was answered “Warrants Unit” and claimed to be a specific sheriff’s office employee.

If you receive these types of phone calls, contact your local law enforcement agency or the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office at (248) 858-4911.

Questions regarding jury duty service can be directed to the Oakland County Jury Office at (248) 858-0029.
