Boston Marathon bandits stole runner's number

Posted: Updated:

A Boston Marathon runner is using social media to shame, and hopefully track down four people who stole her race number to run in the race.

Kara Bonneau traveled from North Carolina to run in the marathon. She had a great time but when she went to find photos of herself running the race, she was surprised to see several other people turn up on her search via her bib number.

The Boston Marathon is one of the most popular road races in the country. Runners have to qualify to get a number or join a charity group to raise money in order to get into the race. Even with those qualifications, the race sells out. About 36,000 people were officially in the race this year.

The folks who organize the race say "bandits" are common despite tighter security. They say there's very little that can be done to police it.

On her Facebook page, she says, "This is unfair to everyone who worked hard to qualify or raise charity money, and to those who qualified but couldn't get in because the race was full. It's also a security issue."

She hopes that if the runners are identified, they can be banned from running other races.  Her photo has been spread across Facebook since she posted it.

The mistake that Bonneau may have made to have her race number stolen: she proudly posted photos of her bib to her Facebook and Instagram accounts in the days leading up to the race.

You've got a few more weeks to enjoy SummerStage, New York's annual performing arts showcase that's 28 years running. But it's not just music: there is dance, comedy, theater, you name it. There are several shows weekly at 14 different parks throughout the five boroughs. A recent show at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park paid tribute to Pete Seeger. Most of the shows are free and are funded by tickets purchased for the some of the bigger acts.
