The Kent Optical building was severely damaged on Thursday night after a suspected drunk driver plowed into the store on the corner of South Robert and Bernard streets and then led officers on a chase.

According to West St. Paul Police, the driver of an SUV backed out of the building once officers arrived at the scene and then led police on a short chase; however, police caught him half a block away.

The man was transported to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, but he is expected to recover and be charged with driving under the influence.

A gas line was also hit in the area, but Xcel Energy says it is under control and no outages are expected.
