One dead in kayak accident in Geneva

GENEVA, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man died in a kayak accident on the Fox River in west suburban Geneva on Saturday.

Geneva Fire Lt. Ted Sciaky said a kayak carrying two young men got too close to the Fox River dam near Route 38 and Water Street and the kayak turned sideways. Rushing water then pushed the kayak over the dam, he said.

The two men were plunged into the river, Sciaky said. One man was ejected from the kayak and the other was stuck inside.

Geneva Fire Department’s water rescue team was dispatched at 4:27 p.m. to the scene.

With the help of two bystanders, one of the victims was pulled out of the Fox River and transported to Delnor Hospital in Geneva in good condition.

“The second victim, because of his entanglement with the kayak and the hydraulic boil of the dam, was unable to get free,” Sciaky said.

The team recovered the body of 26-year-old Dinesh Sudhakar-Uckoo from the river about 6 p.m. Saturday, according to a statement from the Kane County Coroner’s office.

An autopsy Monday found Sudhakar-Uckoo, of Bloomington, died of drowning, though toxicology results are still pending, according to coroner’s office.

Six people in total were traveling down the Fox River during the kayak trip, Sciaky said.

Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation police are investigating.
