Queens Beer Week kicks off

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Queens wants to be known as New York City's beer capital. Queens Beer Week kicked off on Friday to celebrate the borough's crafty breweries and the more than 60 venues that serve their beer.

Dan Bronson of Crescent and Vine in Astoria is the bearded brains behind the inaugural Queens Beer Week. He organized it all. The nine-day celebration of beers brewed in Queens.

Feel free to ask these hops lovers about all things beer, but don't bother asking about their neighbors in Brooklyn because you won't even get the question out. Bronson cut me off and said it's time Queens gets some respect.

Just two years ago, Queens had zero breweries. Now it has seven. One of them is SingleCut Beersmiths in Astoria.

Realizing full well that Brooklyn was out of the question, I was wondering about one other thing: keeping kosher for Passover. Bronson told me the venues have plenty of kosher beers.

Queens Beer Week runs through Sunday, April 27, 2014.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
