Flavored stogies fueling surge in cigar smoking in young people

Posted: Updated:

Tobacco trade publications suggest that flavored cigars are driving the recent growth in cigar consumption. These products are much less expensive than cigarettes.

Cigarette use among teenagers is down. But a study from Rutgers University says cigar use is up in part because of the popularity of flavored cigars.

The FDA has banned flavoring in cigarettes, except for menthol, but that's not the case for cigars. Flavored stogies now make up nearly half of all cigar sales at convenience stores. Flavored varieties were also more popular among women, African Americans, and people under age 35.

Dr. Doris Day, a clinical associate professor at NYU Medical Center, says no matter your age or ethnicity, smoking flavored cigars comes with the same risk and health concerns as any other tobacco product: it is toxic to your lungs and other organs and even raises your risk of skin cancer.

Flavored cigars are often also associated with marijuana use.

    Newark school enrollment problems

    Friday, August 22 2014 5:17 PM EDT2014-08-22 21:17:11 GMT
The school year in Newark is getting off to a rocky start. Classes start in less than two weeks and parents are still waiting in line for hours to find out where their kids are enrolled. The problem is being blamed on a glitch in the school's new online open enrollment system. To say mother of three Jennifer Caraballo is frustrated may be an understatement. She is one of hundreds of Newark parents desperately now trying to find a new school for her children.
