Report: Number of single moms in US doubles

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A recent report shows the number of babies born to unmarried mothers has more than doubled since the 1980s.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than 40 percent of the babies born in the United States in 2012 were born to single mothers.

In 1980, that number was just over 18 percent.

The number may be growing because of the number of women choosing to be single moms via adoption or sperm donors. However, the CDC did not release how many of the women make that choice.
