Orange Line construction to disrupt weekend service

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Service at the Halsted and Roosevelt Orange Line station will be temporarily suspended over the course of five different weekends starting Friday. The service suspension is part of a "major" rehabilitative effort on the elevated Orange Line, also known as the 18th Street connector.

The construction will begin at 10 p.m. Friday and end at 4 a.m. Monday, the CTA said.

Additional weekend-only track closures are scheduled from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. on: May 2-4, May 16-19, May 23-26 and May 30 to June 2, the CTA said. Weekend work will also require partial closures of State Street and/or full or partial closures of 18th Street, the CTA added.

Customers that need to travel between the two adjacent stations can access a free shuttle bus with free transfers back into rail stations to resume the remainder of their trips, the CTA said.

The project is funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation funds and tax-increment financing, also known as TIF districts. The construction is part of a larger $92 million investment in Near South Side transportation options announced by Mayor Emanuel last August, the CTA said.

According to the CTA, the components of the Orange Line structure are beyond their useful life and are in need of replacement since being installed more than 45 years ago. Once the construction is complete, however, the end result will be a "smoother and more reliable service for Orange Line customers," the CTA said.

Meanwhile, additional work includes painting and waterproofing the structure. This will mitigate leaking water from the structure, which had created icy conditions in adjacent parking lots and alleyways during the winter months, the CTA said.

The CTA said customers should allow at least 15 minutes of extra travel time when traveling to or from the Loop via the Orange Line during the next five weekends.
