Locals celebrate National Kite Month

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Let's be honest – it was a long winter. And so far, spring hasn't been all that great either. But in the distance lies a light of hope, and that hope is attached to a string.

April is National Kite Month, a flying sign that we're escaping the cold grasp of one of the worst winters in Chicago history.

Whether you're a kite enthusiast or a novice, the only official kite store in Chicago lies on the northwest side at "Chicago kite."

David Zavell is the manager of Chicago kite, though the store has been in his family for more than two decades.

On their shelves you'll find kites ranging from $15 to hundreds of dollars – and for the experts, they even make custom kites that can cost you several thousands of dollars.

But when it comes to kids, the challenge is replacing the video game controller with a kite string.

That nostalgia is sure to surface in a few weeks at the 16th annual Chicago Kids and Kites Festival at Montrose harbor, a tradition that David started with Mayor Daley nearly 2 decades ago.

But until then, just bear the cold for a little while longer.

Because it is getting warmer, the sun is rising, and the wind is starting to blow.
