Alleged threat prompts more police at Auburn

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: According to a post on the Auburn University website:

Due to continued student and parent anxiety over the reported threat to campus, Auburn University will cancel classes and suspend normal university operations for the day on Wednesday, April 16, 2014. Authorities do not have any additional information and do not believe the threat is credible at this time. Classes and normal operations will resume at 7:45 a.m. on Thursday, April 17.

Police presence has and will be increased in and around the campus of Auburn University today. Please continue to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity or security concerns to Auburn Police at 911 (emergency) or 334-501-3100 (non-emergency).

Research Week activities are also canceled Wednesday.

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Officials say additional security is being added at Auburn University following what they're calling an unsubstantiated threat on campus.

The university's website says information is being circulated about a threatening message posted in a campus restroom.

A statement says no immediate threat has been substantiated. But the police presence is being increased around the Auburn campus.

Posts circulating on social media show what appears to be handwritten threat of a campus "rampage" on Wednesday. A university alert went out after the posts began spreading.

Wednesday is the seventh anniversary of the attack in which a student gunman killed 32 students and faculty members at Virginia Tech University.
