Days of winds, storm black out 260,000 in Michigan

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - Michigan's largest utilities say their crews are fighting wind and rain to restore power in the aftermath of three days of storms that have blacked out about 260,000 homes and businesses.

Detroit-based DTE Energy Co. says 80,000 of its 150,000 affected customers remained offline at 4 p.m. Monday. It says Oakland County in Detroit's northern suburbs was hardest hit with 36,000 still powerless.

The weather may have seemed warm and pleasant despite the storms and wind this weekend, but we're in for a big change over the next 24 hours.

The biggest change: more snow.

The sight of snow in April is not uncommon. In fact, the average snowfall for April is 1.7 inches. You may remember back in 2012 when snow fell three days that month.

The significant temperature swing, however, is fairly uncommon. Temperatures on Sunday reached up to 79 degrees, and by Tuesday afternoon -- about 48 hours later -- the temperatures will be around 39 degrees.

This is probably the largest temperature swing metro Detroit has experienced in the last decade, although severe temperature swings happen most often  in April.
