SANDWICHES AND STARFISH: Documentary highlights hunger helpers

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

He has delivered sandwiches to people in need for more than 40 years, and a film that debuted on Thursday in the Twin Cities is now highlighting his decades-long effort to fight global hunger.

Tickets for the debut of "Starfish Throwers" sold out at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival. On the surface, the film is about food and feeding people in innovative ways -- but what's really drawing people to the theater is the compassion of one Twin Cities man.

For Director Jesse Roeseler and Allan Law, the film's hometown debut and rave reviews are "Amazing.

"We filled the theater upstairs, so they moved us downstairs to a bigger theater," Roeseler said.

After all the pomp and circumstance, the documentary is really about the lives of three ordinary people around the world who do extraordinary things.

"They're probably wondering who the old dude in the corner is," Law joked.

Along with a chef feeding the homeless in India and a 6th-grader creating sustainable gardens in South Carolina, Law's efforts are celebrated too. He works with church groups and businesses that make sandwiches, but at night, he goes out on the streets of Minneapolis and St. Paul to hand them out all by himself, helping anyone in need. For more than 40 years, it's been a full-time, unpaid labor of love.

The movie is also creating a buzz among organizations fighting hunger in the state, but even after the lights dim, there's no doubt Law will be back on the streets with his sandwiches.

"There's a lot of people that have a lot of needs," he said.

There will be one more screening on Saturday afternoon at St. Anthony Main, and a panel discussion on fighting hunger in the Twin Cities will follow.
