Family Seeks Answers For Hit-And-Run Victim

PHILADELPHIA -

A man coming to the United States from Germany for the first time to celebrate his granddaughter's first birthday dies during a layover.

It's believed that Wilfred Fleischmann was tired from the flight and wanted to lay down at a nearby hotel during his layover while his wife stayed at the airport.

Police found the 61-year-old man's body along I-95 northbound a few hours later. They're still looking for the hit-and-run driver. His family is devastated.

"It devastated us. We are broken," Fleischmann's daughter Anita Garza said.

Garza tells us her parents were on their way to visit her in North Carolina for her daughter Nina's first birthday.

"He loved that little girl," Garza said.

Garza says her father was tired from the long flight and told his wife he wanted to get a hotel room and get some sleep, but state police say sometime before 9 p.m. he was hit by a car while he was walking along I-95 near mile marker 12. Investigators say the driver kept on going.

"Maybe he was still alive, maybe there could've been something done," Garza said.

Fleischman's wife, who doesn't speak English, boarded the plane without any knowledge of what had happened to her husband. Her daughter called police and eventually learned of the heartbreaking news.

Garza has launched a social media campaign searching for answers. She urges people to speak up if they know anything about the crash that killed her father

"I would like for that person to be brought to justice. I want them to understand what they have done to us. What they took from us, " Garza said, "He was just a great man. He cared about us a lot."

Police say they found debris from a Chrysler vehicle at the scene. They also say they found what appears to be a black license plate with white writing with the letters g-a-r-m-a-n "garman" stamped on the plate. If you have any information call state police.
