DESOTO COUNTY. Miss. (FOX13) -

There are extra patrols on the streets of DeSoto County after two back-to-back shootings in a Walls, Miss., neighborhood, just south of the Mississippi-Tennessee border.

The first happened Sunday on the 7000 block of Broken Hickory Drive, then the next day, there was a drive-by shooting just two doors down. Five people were arrested, and investigators say the two shootings are gang-related.

"The school bus had just dropped off a load of kids, and then 10  minutes later there's gunfire," neighbor Keith Clardy says of Monday's incident.

In this quiet Walls neighborhood, children are often seen out and about, and neighbors say the only crimes they usually deal with are minor, that is, until this week.

Clardy has lived in the neighborhood for six years and says on Monday he heard gunshots next door, then saw a car speed away.

"It bothers you, my first day, I had three of my grand kids here, eating lunch with me, so they could've been easily outside playing," Clardy said.

For Clardy and his neighbors, the gang violence is getting too close for comfort with some saying they avoid parts of the area.

"It's kind of rough at the other end, I don't go on that end," said Cheryl Spell, neighbor. "I come in and out the back way, but I don't go down to the end of the street."

The DeSoto County Sheriff's Department is investigating. So far they have five people behind bars and other suspects are at-large.

Authorities are also looking into whether these incidents are related to a recent string of shootings in Clarksdale, Miss.

"There's some gang aspects involved, we've got no ties to Clarksdale, but there's definitely some gang involvement in this," Chief Investigator Roger Hutchins said.

While they haven't tied the shootings to Clarksdale yet, local authorities are looking into it, and they're putting more patrols in the area to cut down on the violence.

"We're always concerned, we want DeSoto County to stay DeSoto County," Hutchins said.

The extra patrols are putting neighbors' minds at ease for now.

"Deputies are coming through every few minutes, and they told us they would," Clardy said. "My hope is that after this dies down, they'll continue to come through."

If you have any information on either of these incidents, you're urged to call CrimeStoppers at 662-429-TIPS.
