Woman settles strip search lawsuit with LaSalle County

Posted: Updated:

A woman who claimed she was the victim of an illegal strip search by sheriff's deputies in LaSalle County has settled her lawsuit against the county.

Five other alleged victims are part of the settlement, which will cost the county about a third of a million dollars.

Dana Holmes, 33 of Coal City, will get $225,000 in the settlement. Some of that money will go toward her attorney's fees. The five other people will split another $130,000, making the total settlement $355,000.

Holmes admitted that she deserved to be arrested for a DUI, but claimed she didn't deserve what happened next.

The problems started after Holmes was transferred to the LaSalle County jail to be processed. While there, a female officer, identified as Samantha Kromm, frisked Holmes and threw her in a cell as three male officers stood by. They were identified in the federal civil rights lawsuit as deputies Tyson Szafranski, and Deputies Puckett and Hollenbeck.

Holmes' attorney says she was left naked in the cell for about a minute, until deputies finally tossed her in a blanket.

Holmes' attorneys say that during depositions, the LaSalle County sheriff said the practices observed in this case had been going on for 40 years.

A special prosecutor is investigating whether the officers involved should face criminal charges.

County officials are not admitting fault in the case, but admit there were gaps in training which will be corrected going forward. The county and sheriff's department agreed it was in everybody's best interest to focus on developing solid policies and training going forward.
