Jack Jablonski to attend prom with ESPN's Michelle Beadle

Posted: Updated:

In a few weeks, high school sweethearts will sway at proms across the Twin Cities -- but the big event at Benilde-St. Margaret will have some extra star power now that Michelle Beadle can attend as Jack Jablonski's "special guest."

Beadle is the host of ESPN's Sports Nation, and she has been a big supporter of Jablonski since he suffered a spinal cord injury during a hockey game. The two built a relationship on Twitter, and Jablonski formally asked her to join him while on air with 105 The Ticket a few weeks ago.

"Caught me by surprise," he admitted. "Didn't expect her to say yes."

Two and a half years have passed since his accident, and Jablonski continues to get stronger each day as he counts down to graduation.

"I've lived it to the fullest and had a blast since then," he said.

In just a few weeks, he's sure to have another blast at prom. Although Jablonski worried the pair might not even have a chance due to a school policy designed to protect students, leaders at the school evaluated the case and decided to make an exception.

Normally, the school does not allow anyone over 20 to attend the prom to protect the students from alcohol exposure -- and even Beadle admits the age difference was a concern for her at first.

"I thought, 'It probably seems awfully creepy,'" she told Fox 9 News by phone. "Then, I thought, 'I'm just going to show up like Matthew McConaughey in 'Dazed and Confused' and hang out at a prom.'"

On Tuesday, Jabby worked out a deal with the school to allow Beadle to be his special guest -- not a date.

"Benilde is strict about it and they have been very generous and helpful in working it out so it's not something that is frowned upon," Jablonski said.

In the end, the principal of the school said Beadle's support of Jabby earned her the right to be a guest at the school -- which means she now has to pick out a dress.

"I'm glad everything worked out -- and the last thing I want to do is crash Jack's party and be lame," she said.

Even though the two have gotten in touch online in the past, they have yet to meet -- and Jablonski said this is the perfect opportunity to say thanks.

"She's been very supportive since the beginning," he said.

As for whether Jablonski is getting special treatment, the principal told Fox 9 News that if the issue ever comes up again, school officials will speak with the student and their parents to make decisions on a case-by-case basis.
