Detroit gas stations to have better security by summer

DETROIT (WJBK) - Detroit City Council unanimously passed an ordinance Tuesday requiring Detroit gas station owners to install digital security cameras on their properties by August 31.

The cameras must be strategically placed as to capture all patron's faces at entrance and exit points. Cameras will be mounted on the exterior and interior walls of the establishment.

If a crime occurs, police must have access to the video within one hour.

Owners are responsible for covering the cost of the upgraded security cameras, but Councilman Andre Spivey says most already have this equipment. He adds, "You cannot put a price on one's life."

Renewal licenses will be held from owners who do not comply with the ordinance, or the owner could face a fine.

"From a legislative point of view we have to do all that we can to make sure we keep our citizens safe, and our way on Council of doing that is making sure we have laws in place. This law can be enforced; it will be enforced. It's our job to keep our citizens safe in the city of Detroit," says Spivey.

He adds the ordinance has been on the books for some time and the timing of the ordinance's passing just happens to be in coincidence with recent crimes taking place outside gas stations, such as the attack on Steve Utash or the murder of Eric Miles.
