Community rallies to help woman hurt in hit and run crash

Posted: Updated:

A possible break for investigators trying to track down a driver who ran down a family while they were walking their bikes on the shoulder of a road.

The mother was seriously injured and remains hospitalized.

The truck had only been on the road for eight months -- a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado.

The pictures went out Sunday and Maricopa County Sheriff's detectives tell FOX 10 the tips started coming in.

On Tuesday, MCSO said they've located the truck. It's not at a residence, but at a business in Phoenix.  The investigation continues.

In the meantime, the friends of the people injured in the hit and run are rallying.

"How could someone do that?  How'd it happen?"

Cam Nelson's friends and family are stunned and angered after someone in a red truck hit her, her young son Lance and her boyfriend.

The driver kept going.

"With the damage they say might be done on the right side of the vehicle, I just can't imagine anyone saying I didn't know I hit something or somebody," said Tim Kane.

MCSO detectives say Nelson and the others were walking their bikes in the shoulder along a stretch of 115th Avenue when the truck crossed into the gravel and hit them.

Cam's son Connor is slightly hurt, her boyfriend has a broken leg.  It's Cam who is the most seriously hurt, still in intensive care at a hospital.

Friends are rallying to help raise money for Nelson's mounting hospital bills.  A fundraising page is set up for the single mom, who has two jobs, but no health insurance.

"Cam is a vibrant soul.  Always there for friends.. a really good person," said Kane.

Businesses in the northwest valley are pitching in to raise money.  Kane says they're hoping others will pitch in as well.

"Involve yourself if you live in this community.. obviously her friends are on board with supporting not only the monetary support, but the emotional support as well," he said.

As for the criminal investigation, MCSO says they are waiting for search warrants on the truck.  Their challenge is to determine who was behind the wheel during the hit and run.  We should know more on Wednesday.
