Shorty Awards honor best of social media

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

From Twitter to Vine to Instagram, social media has become such a big part of our lives. There's an award show to recognize those doing it best: The Shorty Awards. We met some of the people make a name for themselves with a few little key strokes.

6-second vine videos have made college freshman Logan Paul of Ohio kind of a big deal on social media. He has 3.7 million followers on Vine, making him the 13th most popular Viner in the world. Younger brother Jake is also rising in the ranks, with 1.4 million followers. Paul's videos have won more than just laughs. They earned him a nomination at the Shorty Awards honoring the best in social media. And perhaps most impressively, they've earned him some real money. Major brands like Pepsi and Microsoft have hired him to produce their Vine videos.

But slapstick humor isn't the only thing attracting attention on sites like Vine. Husband and wife duo Michael and Carissa Rae Alvarado, known as "Us," began posting videos of themselves singing on Vine last year. They didn't show their faces so people would focus on their harmonies. A record label found them and signed them to as deal. Appropriately, Us performed at the Shortys Monday night.

Many new Ford and GM cars have built-in technology that allows you to monitor speed, signaling, and navigation when your child is driving. But when it comes to this type of digital snooping, teens and their parents often have differing opinions. Kids may call it an invasion of privacy. Most parents, of course, will likely feel otherwise.
