Authorities on Monday arrested a teenager in connection with a fire that critically hurt two police officers in Coney Island, Brooklyn, over the weekend.
Marcell Dockery, 16, faces assault, arson, and reckless endangerment charges, police said. He apparently told cops that he intentionally set the fire because he was "bored," according to a report in the New York Post.
The fire broke out in a high-rise on Surf Ave. Sunday morning injuring at least 12.
Officer Rosa Rodriguez, 36, and Officer Dennis Guerra, 38, went up the elevator in the building to the 13th floor, where they were overcome with smoke. Firefighters later located both officers, who were unconscious, brought them back down the elevator and treated outside the building.
Rodriguez was later transported to Cornell Medical Center. Guerra was stabilized at Coney Island Hospital and then airlifted to Jacobi. They are being treated for carbon monoxide poisoning and smoke inhalation.
Both officers have four children.
The Post reported that Dockery ignited a mattress with a light and then tried to put it out but couldn't. The Post also reported that he was also arrested in 2010 in connection with a fire.
