Chicagoan carrying concealed weapon fires 1st legal shot

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

What happened in a South Austin gangway may be the first legal discharge of a firearm since concealed carry permits were mailed out this year.

Police said two suspects walked up to a man on private property early Saturday morning. They pulled out a gun and to their surprise, so did the victim, who happened to be a concealed carry permit holder.

Chicago police said the victim fired several shots scaring the suspects off.

"Somebody is going to take something that's yours? You're supposed to do it but for it to happen around here, that's surprising to me and the summer hasn't even hit yet," said Michael Dotson in an interview with FOX 32's Tisha Lewis.

However, long-time South Austin resident Michael Dotson said he's not for guns in any situation.

"I don't believe in guns. I'll take my chances with God, you know but it's to me, I do want to know if something like that is going on, on the block," said Dotson.

The shooting is the buzz on the block and online.

On Twitter @StylebyTami posted, "So begins the wildwest."

Fidelity Investigative Training Academy answered frequently asked questions on its website, including concerns about concealed carry and private property.

"Private property with the concealed carry laws is kind of interesting because you actually don't need a concealed carry permit now to carry on your own property, at your home, your fixed place of business, things of that nature," said Andrew Queen, Executive Director of Fidelity Investigative Training Academy.

Police said the victim in the South Austin shooting does not face any charges.

"I think it sends a signal to the criminals that it's no longer open season on citizens. While certainly you don't want to see anyone get shot, I think that armed citizens can certainly act as a deterrent to the criminal element and maybe help to bring the crime rate down a little bit," said Queen.
