Giant Pandas Make Their Debut In Belgium

Posted: Updated:

Two giant pandas are on display at a zoo in Belgium. The pandas arrived at Pairi Daiza Zoo almost a month ago and now they are making their debut Thursday.

They're being leased by a conservation and research center in southwest China.

The two pandas, named Xing Hui and Hao Hao, will be studied as part of a research program.

If the project is successful, it will be the longest time any giant panda has lived abroad.

"Well, last year we had 1.2 million visitors here in the seven months the park is open in the summer. We know from other zoos like Edinburgh, Madrid and Vienna, who already have pandas  that, of course, the attraction of a panda will raise the visitor numbers, so we are thinking there will be a small increase in visitor numbers this year as well," says Director Of Pairi Daiza Zoo, Steffen Patzwah

This is the second time Belgium has hosted giant pandas.

About sixteen hundred giant pandas live in the wild. Most reside in China's Sichuan province  and another three hundred or so live in captivity.
