U-D Mercy hosts Special Olympics Day

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - For the second time, University of Detroit Mercy is hosting Special Olympics Day.

The day brings together Special Olympic athletes from six Detroit schools, who learn a few moves from some of the U-D Titans.

The day is part of Project Unify, which brings people together.

"We bring general education and special education students together to promote inclusion, so our special education students can be included in all events," says Robin Bush, from A.L. Holmes School.

Whether kids or adults, special olympic athletes have intellectual disabilities, and sometimes physical disabilities, but through sport they enjoy friendship, fitness and competition.

"They just don't get the recognition that other people do and I think it's really important for us athletes to see that these other Special Olympic athletes are just like us, really. They have the same competitiveness, they love the sport just like we do and they are willing to train hard," says Sara Cupp, an event organizer and U-D Mercy athlete.

FOX has proudly partnered with the 2014 USA Special Olympic Games, which start June 14 in New Jersey.
