CORINTH, Miss. (AP) -

The city of Corinth has repealed its local gun ordinance.

Mayor Tommy Irwin says the city will follow the state gun law to enforce violations.

Irwin says he and aldermen took the action Tuesday after being lobbied by Second Amendment activists to make the change.

Police Chief David Lancaster told the city board that making the change would pose no problem for the police department.

After a new gun carry law was passed last year, the city asked for an attorney general's opinion as to whether the city could enforce the ordinance that prohibited carrying a gun in public places like the city park, where the gun carry supporters planned a rally.

The Mississippi Supreme Court upheld the state's open carry law and it went into effect in August 2013.
