SOUTH MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

The Memphis Fire Department battled a large house fire in the 4000 block of Beauchamp Cove in the Oakhaven area of Memphis Tuesday evening.

According to fire officials, the owner of the home was asleep on the first floor. He heard smoke alarms and woke up. Officials say the homeowner heard the fire burning and went upstairs with his fire extinguisher. When he got upstairs, there was heavy smoke present. He managed to get out safely. There were no others present in the home at the time.

There were no injuries to firefighters or other civilians. The cause of the fire was due to a malfunctioning water heater located on second floor of the home.

The Memphis Fire Department strongly urges all citizens to maintain a working smoke detector in their place of residence.
