DOWNTOWN MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Memphis City Council members, who have been waiting to hear how Mayor A C Wharton plans to cut $80 million in spending to avoid a huge tax hike, left even more frustrated after getting a preview Tuesday.

This all goes back to funding the pension fund. It must soon be fully funded and that means coming up with about $80 million.

But when Chief Administrative Officer George Little went over the consultants recommendations on how to cut spending, the council was not satisfied.

Council members had been expecting to hear how Mayor Wharton proposed to save $80 million. Instead they saw only about $25 million in savings, $20 million coming from total pension reform.

The Wharton administration says the full $80 million will be realized in the five-year plan, with no tax increase. But council members are predicting a giant increase within two years.
