MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Memphis City Council's budget committee voted Tuesday to close the city's weights and measures program.

The division's inspectors check gas pumps, retail scales in stores and other devices for accuracy as part of the consumer protection program.

But some council members say the inspectors are doing work the State of Tennessee could be doing in Memphis. The move will save about $400,000 from the city's budget, but about a half dozen workers will lose their jobs.

"It's shortsighted and what it leads to is corruption," said Councilman Joe Brown. "When you take away those amenities of weights and measures throughout this community then that leads to corruption."

"We are in the hole deficit-wise because of the pension problem, $40-$80 million," added Councilman Jim Strickland. "If we're having trouble cutting $400,000, I can't imagine how we're going to cut the amount that we need to cut to balance the budget."

The council debated cutting the program in 2013 before deciding to keep it around. The proposal will go in front of the full city council.
