MEMPHIS, Tenn. -

A man convicted in February of raping an 8-year-old girl in the Orange Mound home where he was staying has been sentenced to 35 years in prison with no parole, Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich said Tuesday. Ed Loyde, 52, told the family with whom he was living on Meda in May of 2011 that he was a church deacon studying to be a pastor.

He lived in their home for several months and when he moved out the young girl told her grandmother of Loyde's actions and the grandmother notified police.

In 1997 Loyde pleaded guilty in Texas to indecency with a child under age 17 and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

On Monday Criminal Court Judge James Beasley Jr. sentenced Loyde to 25 years in prison for rape of a child and 10 years in prison for aggravated sexual battery. Both sentences are without parole and will run consecutively.

Loyde also will be placed on the Sex Offender Registry and will be under Community Supervision for life.

The case was handled by assistant district attorneys Terre Fratesi and Cavett Ostner of the Special Victims Unit (SVU).

The SVU prosecutes cases of child sexual abuse and severe physical abuse of child victims; rape and aggravated rape of adult victims, and abuse of elderly and vulnerable adults.

SVU reviews child-victim cases cooperatively with Shelby County's multi-agency Child Protection Investigative Team.
