"Rod is a veteran of the corrections industry," Mayor Luttrell said in a statement. "He's held key leadership positions at both the Shelby County Corrections Center and Shelby County Sheriff's Office. I appreciate his willingness to leave retirement and serve as the Interim Director of Corrections.

Bowers, 66, worked with Shelby County government for 40 years, all of them in the field of corrections. He was hired in 1972 and worked with inmates with special needs. Bowers was later the Director of Mental Health Services and the eventually Chief of Care and Custody of Inmates. In 2004, he joined the Shelby County Sheriff's Office as Assistant Chief of Programs at the Shelby County Jail.

He retired Nov. 30, 2012.

"I appreciate the opportunity to serve as Interim Director of Corrections," Bower said. "Fortunately, there's an excellent team at the corrections center to ensure the safety and security of inmates and staff."

Bowers graduated from the University of Memphis in 1969 with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology. He also did post-graduate work there.

Additionally, Bowers is on the board of Grace House, a non-profit agency that assists women with addiction issues.
