Illinois makes last push for health insurance sign-up

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

On a day when those trying to enroll in the state's Health Insurance Marketplace last-minute really needed the healthcare signup websites to work, they once again encountered problems Monday night.

At the University of Illinois hospital, a registration help center was staying open until the deadline.

But, it was a day when patience was the best medicine.

"We're just waiting around to see, to make sure that we're gonna get our turn in line I guess, but we don't know if we have a turn in line yet," Gabriel Chacon told FOX 32.

Gabriel Chacon and his family tried to sign up for health care coverage, but the system was down. It was a common problem all day.

"We're having issues this morning and haven't been able to enroll people in the marketplace because it was down," The University of Illinois' Financial Case Manager Lalo Lechuga explained Monday morning.

Case managers said many people experienced sticker shock when they realized how much their premiums would cost.

Gabriel, a self-described procrastinator, was glad to have at least gotten the process started, which means he will get a grace period of system troubles keep him from getting fully signed up.

He was also relieved to have come in during a slower time.

"I'm actually kind of relieved that it will wasn't a line around the block," he said.

Longtime friends Melloney Young and Dyann King came in together and got signed up for Medicaid coverage without any problems.

"I feel good," Young said after signing up. "Because I tried before when it first took effect, and it didn't go through."

For these women, the process was easy. The motivation?

"I did not want to get penalized when I received my income tax. I didn't, period," King said.
