MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) - -

Paying tribute to our teachers.

On Sunday churches and schools across Shelby County took part in the third annual Celebration of Teachers.

While being a teacher is a challenge anywhere, teachers in the Achievement School District were celebrated in one of many special ceremonies Sunday for going that extra mile.

The ASD aims to take the bottom five percent of schools in Tennessee and put them in the top 25 percent in the state in just five years. Many of those schools are in Memphis, including six schools in Frayser.  Now the community is giving back to the people who are working to give their kids a better education.

"We know this is a tough job and we hope it's the toughest job you'll ever love," ASD Executive Director Ash Solar said.

Students, parents, and community members took the chance to say 'thank you' to the people in front of the classroom.

"On a Sunday, to come out and appreciate the teachers for all the hard work we do, it makes me feel like hey, you know what, I'm glad," Whitney Achievement Elementary School Teacher Erikca Hull said, "It makes me excited about getting up every Monday morning to come out and do the best work that I can for the community."

Church leaders and school districts teamed up for the annual event dedicated to showing teachers some appreciation.

"Today we wanted to take just a few moments to celebrate some of the people that have one of the most thankless jobs possible, the teachers," Pastor DeAndre Brown of Lifeline to a Dying World Ministries said, "We wanted to make sure they understood the Frayser community appreciates their dedication, hard work and commitment to excellence in education in our community."

Dozens in Frayser came out in support of a special group of teachers in the Achievement School District, working to bring the bottom five percent schools in Tennessee to the top.

"At the end of the day, our teachers fill the parking lot way too early, and empty the parking lot way too late, and it means a lot for them to know that they're supported and championed by the community they're serving," ASD Executive Director Ash Solar said.

And it's giving them the encouragement they need to get the  job done.

"Any time someone would take the time out to say we love what you do, we appreciate what you do, thank you for coming to the Frayser community every day, it makes you feel good, it makes you feel like hey, I can do this," Hull said.
