DETROIT (WJBK) - General Motors is recalling an additional 824,000 small vehicles, saying the ignition switches could be faulty.

It's the same problem that prompted GM to recall more than one million Cobalts and other compact cars. The defective switch has been linked to at least 12 deaths and dozens of crashes.

The company will add vehicles from the 2008-2011 model years to a recall that initially covered cars only through the 2007 model year.

Vehicles involved in the recall:

  • Chevrolet Cobalt
  • Chevrolet HHR
  • Pontiac G5
  • Pontiac Solstice
  • Saturn Ion
  • Saturn Sky

GM says around 5,000 of the faulty switches were used for repairs on 2008-2011 model year cars. GM says it's expanding the recall to make sure it finds all the switches.

GM says it's not aware of any fatalities connected to the defect in the 2008-2011 models.

The ignition switches can move out of the "run" position and cause the engine to stall.

The news of this additional recall comes on the same day news broke the company told its dealers to stop selling some 2013 and 2014 Chevrolet Cruze compact cars, but would not say why.

The city of Detroit says workers and retirees have approved pension cuts, a crucial step to emerging from the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. The city reported results Monday after two months of balloting ended July 11. A judge still must hold a trial to determine if Detroit's overall bankruptcy plan is fair and feasible, but support from retirees is vital.
