Funeral home may trick you to think a loved one has died

WJBK - An email from a funeral home circulating the Internet is the latest way hackers are trying to get access to your computer.

The email is from Douglass Funeral Home and requests you to "attend the funeral of your friend who untimely died." A date of death is given, and so is a date and time for the funeral.

Then the email reads, "More detailed information can be found here," and includes a hyperlink.

If you receive this email - do not click the link.

Melanie Duquensel, President and CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Eastern Michigan, says if the link is clicked, malware could be put into your computer to crash it or to try and steal your personal information, such as a social security number, bank account or credit card numbers.

"When you're taking unsolicited or unwarranted emails and they're asking you to click links its a huge red flag," she says.

April Morton of Detroit tells FOX 2's Andrea Isom she received the email, and says she is glad she trusted her gut and did not click the link. But, she's sharing her story because she is worried others out there may not be as savvy.

"If a senior citizen saw this, of course they're going to say, 'Oh dear, one of my friends has passed,' and they're going to click on it," Morton says.

"The difficulty is, is that when you see these emails is that they look almost real. It looks like it's coming from the place you may think of," says Duquensel.
