MSP AIRPORT: Arrive 2 1/2 hours before domestic flight

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Officials at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport are asking travelers to arrive at least 2 1/2 hours before their scheduled departure times because lately, passengers have been missing flights.

According to the airport, both terminals are seeing an increase in passengers resulting in growing security lines; however, officials say arriving the recommended 2 1/2 hours before any domestic flight will allow time for check-in, security screening and getting to the correct gate.

In some ways, the problem has been growing for a while -- especially during peak travel times -- as a couple of separate issues have converged. The TSA has seen staffing cuts, and Terminal 1 has a lot of checkpoints compared to other airports, with 8 all told. Meanwhile, airlines are consolidating more flights in the early morning and late afternoons, which is when most people want to fly.

For a long time, checkpoint 10 over near the light rail and rental cars was a sort of insider secret for quick access. Now, however, that checkpoint is closed during peak times so the TSA agents can be at the main terminal.

Airport officials don't expect the 2 1/2-hour time frame to be the new normal for travelers, but they say it could pop up again during busy travel seasons.

TRAVEL TIPS

- Be cautious about rush-hour times at the airport, like between 5-8 a.m. and 4-6 p.m.

- Weekends are often busier than weekdays

- Travel surges in the week before Easter, so prepare for longer lines
