World Meeting Of Families Contracts Signed

Posted: Updated:

The 8th World Meeting of Families will be held in Philadelphia in September 2015.

Several hundred thousand visitors are expected to a come, from all over the world, with even more expected if Pope Francis attends.

Fox 29's Bruce Gordon is in Rome where the official contracts were signed earlier today.

"In the end, our goal is simple, we want to help families strengthen their family life in very practical ways," Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput said.

The signing session was mostly ceremonial, a chance to cement the bonds of friendship between the host city and host organization.

Pa. Gov. Tom Corbett called Pennsylvania a logical site for the festivities, referencing Commonwealth founder William Penn.

"He called his new colony the holy experiment, and three centuries later that experiment continues,"Corbett said.

The official theme has not been finalized. However, it is known that the Pennsylvania Convention Center has been booked for September 22-27th, and the Parkway will be used for large open air masses.

A prospect that pleased the PCF president Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia.

Gifts were exchanged between the parties. Mayor Michael Nutter presented the PCF president with a mini Liberty Bell, which he later referenced in his hopes for Philadelphia.

"My dream is that in that week, the bell, will ring for a new spring for the families of the world," he said.

The World Meeting of Families carries a 15 million dollar price tag, and the hosts are expected to foot the bill. Only about a third of that money has been raised so far.

This will be the second time Philadelphia has played host to the event.
