Y.E.S program helps Fulton Co. teens find jobs

Posted: Updated:
FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -

Ask some teens, and they'll tell you it's harder than ever to find a job.

That's why some in Fulton County are turning to a workforce training program for help.

The program is called "Y.E.S" --- which stands for: Youth Enrichment Services. It's a year round, comprehensive youth training and employment program to help youth, ages 16-21 find a job.

The program encourages leadership and independent thinking, and assists youth of Fulton County with assessing and accomplishing their educational and career goals.

Services available on site include:

  • Career & Educational Counseling
  • Pre & Post Educational & Employability Assessments
  • Follow Up & Retention
  • On-Site Recruitment Events
  • Internet access for online job search
  • Computers for resume and cover letter writing
  • Job Readiness Workshops
  • Self-assisted assessment and supportive services (on-line and written)
  • Access to a fax machine and telephone
  • Access to the State of Georgia's Eligible Service Provider List

18-year-old Tavares Bently wanted a job. But his mom Del Jackson says, he just couldn't find one.

"There were some struggles along the way, he was just like, Mom I'm ready, I need a job. I need some money. I need to have my own money," said Jackson.

Tavares turned to the Fulton County Youth Enrichment Services program, and things quickly turned around. He got a job at a full service copy center.

Programs like this are more important than ever. A new report by the Employment Policies Institute finds that Georgia has the 4th highest teen unemployment rate in the country, at 31.4 %

Jason Lane, with the YES program is to help chip away at that number, by finding employers in the community who want to hire unemployed teens.

"When you hear statistics like that, I lean on our employers to take action, to open their doors and provide opportunities," said Lane. He says one of the biggest challenges facing teens today is the current job climate. "The job market has changed drastically, a lot of the jobs that were reserved primarily for the youth are now being taken by adults! There's a lot more competition," he said.
