Conn.-based sub in Arctic for Navy exercises

Posted: Updated:

GROTON, Conn. (AP) - A Connecticut-based attack submarine has traveled to the Arctic Ocean for Navy exercises intended to test capabilities in harsh, frigid conditions.

The Navy says Groton-based USS New Mexico joined attack submarine USS Hampton out of San Diego for Arctic exercises that began on Wednesday.

The Navy says the submarine force conducts the Ice Exercises to assure continued access to the Arctic Ocean, which submarines cross when traveling between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

A camp and tracking range will be built into an ice floe north of Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.

The Navy says the submarine force last conducted Arctic exercises in 2012 by the last time an ice camp was established for exercises there was 2011.

It's a running joke that if you mention the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center to nearly anyone in Hollywood they're going to know exactly what you're talking about because odds are they might have gotten their first big break there. Would you believe some Hollywood's biggest stars -- Meryl Streep, Michael Douglas, Angela Bassett -- got their start in a big red barn in the middle of nowhere.

The Metro-North Railroad has sacrificed safety for on-time performance, according to a report released Wednesday by a Metropolitan Transportation Authority panel. The report echoes an assessment conducted this year by the Federal Railroad Administration, which investigated after a string of Metro-North accidents including a December 2013 derailment that killed four riders in the Bronx.
