Man faces hearing in death of teen at East Detroit pool

Posted: Updated:

EASTPOINTE, Mich. -- A man charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of a teenage boy he failed to pull from a high school pool in the Detroit area faces a court hearing.

Johnathan Sails appeared in court Wednesday for a pre-exam hearing in Eastpointe District Court.

Sails' lawyer, Robert Leonetti, says his client is "devastated by the tragedy" and innocent of the charge against him.

The Macomb County prosecutor says Sails was supposed to be monitoring a remedial swim class at East Detroit High School on Nov. 8 when students told him KeAir Swift was having trouble in the water.

Authorities say Sails changed clothing in a locker room before jumping into the pool. A vice principal wearing a suit jumped in and pulled out the 14-year-old.

KeAir later died.
