Rauner: Wealth won't decide GOP governor's race

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO (AP) - Bruce Rauner's wealth has been an underlying theme throughout the campaign for Illinois governor, from his choice of wristwatch to critics' questions about his business dealings.

His rivals - state Sens. Kirk Dillard and Bill Brady and Treasurer Dan Rutherford - also have accused Rauner of trying to "buy" the GOP nomination.

The Winnetka venture capitalist has put $6 million of his own money into his campaign.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Rauner addressed some of the criticisms.

He says he acquired his wealth through hard work, not an inheritance, and has given millions to school reform and other causes.

Rauner also says his message - not his fortune - is the defining factor in the campaign and the reason he's the front-runner entering Tuesday's primary.
