SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Office Max is beginning its process of moving 1,600 jobs out of Illinois after merging with Florida-based Office Depot.

The move comes after the Illinois Legislature declined to give the company millions in tax breaks. Office Depot officials said lawmakers' inaction was part of their decision to relocate.

The company released a memo to state legislative leaders and Du Page County officials saying that it plans to begin moving employees out of the Naperville headquarters in April.

The letter, obtained by The Associated Press, tells officials that operations in Naperville will close as jobs are moved to Boca Raton, Fla.

Some jobs are being completely eliminated, however. Office Depot CEO Roland Smith said late last month that the company is reducing its corporate positions in a restructuring process.
