Ex-alderman Robert Shaw to run for Chicago mayor

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO (AP) - Former Chicago alderman and Cook County commissioner Robert Shaw says he's running for Chicago mayor.

Shaw made the announcement Thursday, saying he plans to challenge Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel in next year's race. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Shaw says "becoming mayor of Chicago is the right thing to do." Shaw said in a news release before his announcement that he's concerned with school closings and pensions.

Shaw has been a longtime Chicago-area politician. He was alderman of the 9th Ward and an adviser to former U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun, who ran against Emanuel in 2011. Shaw's late brother, William Shaw, was mayor of the Chicago suburb of Dolton.

Robert Shaw had lived in South Holland since 1999. He moved back to Chicago's Hyde Park-Kenwood neighborhood in December.
