FOX 9 ARCHIVE: World wide web turns 25

Posted: Updated:

The World Wide Web turned 25 Wednesday and just about everything has changed since 1989, including our own Tom Lyden, who fronted this 6-part series on the internet back in 1995. So kick back, dial-up, wait for that familiar tone and you're connected.

Internet Series Part 1: In 1995, when getting connected was fairly new, there were only 3 million computers and only 25 million users of the internet. In 2012, the number of internet users exploded to more than 2.25 billion users. WATCH VIDEO

Internet Series part 2: Loading a page like this one from the Minneapolis Institute of Arts might have taken you 30 minutes back in the old dial-up days. WATCH VIDEO

Internet Series part 3: Every hour seemed like rush hour and sometimes connecting to your modem was next to impossible. Back in 1995 do you remember joining an online service such as America On-Line, Prodigy, CompuServe or Delphi? WATCH VIDEO

Internet Series part 4: Well before search engines delivered content, yahoo for example simply spit out results that looked like the picture above. The lovely green hue of the screen only added to the surfing experience. WATCH VIDEO

Internet Series part 5: Long before dating sites became normal, there was still a place for "looking for the right one". The big problem? There were too many guys and not as many females. WATCH VIDEO

Internet Series part 6: In Tom's final segment, he answers questions ranging from long distance charges for those living in rural areas and the issue of call waiting cutting off connection. WATCH VIDEO
